Springside science chair wins 2009
Outstanding Teacher Award
The National Association of Biology Teachers, in conjunction with Prentice Hall and the Duquesne University Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, presented Scott Stein, the Science Department Chairman at Springside School, with the 2009 Pennsylvania Outstanding Biology Teacher Award. This honor, given annually since 1961, identifies a teacher from each of the United States, its possessions, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and Canada who has made valuable contributions to the profession and to his/her students. Criteria for the award include teaching ability, experience, inventiveness, initiative, inherent teaching strengths, and cooperativeness in the school and community.
Stein received his B.S. from Muhlenberg College of Pennsylvania and his M. Ed from the University of Virginia. Stein currently teaches AP Biology, Human Physiology, Honors Biology, and Biology at Springside School of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Stein has been extremely active in the Springside School community since 1983, and presently supplements his impressive instruction by serving as a member of the Discipline Committee, as a Student Advisor, and as an integral part of the Student Science Outreach Program.
Stein has been highly active in the area of professional growth throughout his distinguished career. He has been a participant in numerous educational workshops, including the National Association of Biology Teachers and the National Science Teachers Association. He has served as a field tester for several educational publications, and he has been accepted as an AP Biology Exam reader since 2001. In addition, Scott served as an instructor in the Academy of Natural Sciences from 1985-1994. He is currently the lead instructor for teacher workshops at the Philadelphia Satellite Center for the Princeton Molecular Biology Outreach Program. Stein has continued to translate his science expertise into practical, powerful educational materials, developing numerous laboratory investigations and web quests for middle and high school curricula
For his accomplishments and service, Stein has been honored with a number of grants and fellowships, culminating in his recognition as the 2009 OBTA for Pennsylvania.
Stein will be presented with his official award plaque at a special presentation given by the NABT at its 2009 National Convention in Denver, Colorado. In addition to the certificate, Scott will receive precision binoculars by Prentice Hall (sponsor of the award), a complimentary year membership in NABT, and cash awards generously provided by the Duquesne University Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences and the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative.
The NABT is extremely proud of his accomplishments, and the news of his award.
