Sarah H. E. Baltzell, real estate broker and photographer

Sarah Handy Edwards Baltzell, 77, formerly of Chestnut Hill, a photographer and real estate broker, died Aug. 31 at her home in Center City.

Mrs. Baltzell’s photographs have been shown in galleries in Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, Texas and Oklahoma. She also had written frequently for the Chestnut Hill Local in the 1960s and early 1970s on a variety of topics.

Born in Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. Baltzell was the granddaughter of R.J. Edwards, an attorney who was one of the founding settlers of Oklahoma.

She was a graduate of the Shipley School and Bryn Mawr College. Later in life, she studied law at Widener University, becoming a paralegal, and then completed a master’s degree in business administration at Temple University.

She also took courses in photography at Philadelphia Community College and studied horticulture at the Barnes Foundation.

An avid gardener, she was a member of the Schuylkill River Park Community Garden and the Pennsylvania Historical Society. In the 1990s she planted street trees in Center City as a volunteer for the Philadelphia Tree Planting Project.

She was active in community associations and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and was one of the Designing Women, an organization of women who invested in businesses that would enhance the city.

She was a member of the Acorn Club, the Cosmopolitan Club, The Athenaeum, The Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Order of First Families of Virginia.

Mrs. Baltzell was married to the late Dr. William Hewson Baltzell IV. The couple was divorced in 1974.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Southall Baltzell; a son, William Hewson Baltzell V; brothers Archibald Edwards of Boston and Hilary Edwards of Paris, France; sisters Elizabeth Amato of Rome, Italy, and Mary Edwards of New York, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at the Acorn Club, 1519 Locust St., in Philadelphia. Memorial donations may be made to the Philadelphia Sketch Club, 235 S. Camac St., Philadelphia, PA  19107.
