![]() Mark Ueland, architect Mark Ueland, 74, of Chestnut Hill, an architect who was long active in community affairs, died Oct. 10 at his home of multiple myeloma, only days after his condition was diagnosed. Since moving to Chestnut Hill in 1966, Mr. Ueland had played a prominent role in the Chestnut Hill Community Association, its Land Use Planning Committee and the Friends of the Fountain Plaza. Most recently, he had written a series of articles on zoning and sustainability for the Chestnut Hill Local. At the time of his death, Mr. Ueland was a senior associate of UJMN Architects + Designers of Philadelphia, a firm that he had co-founded in 1967 as Ueland and Junker. His architectural work in Chestnut Hill includes the Top of the Hill, the Chestnut Hill Academy Main Building restoration and Arts Center addition, and several residences, including two of his own. He was able to put into practice his interest in sustainability by designing a passive solar home for his family in 1979. He recently completed an extensive renovation of the Friends Center on Arch Street that is considered to be a model of energy conservation and environmentally sustainable design. A native of Minneapolis, Mr. Ueland was a graduate of the Blake School, Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts. In addition to his love for architecture, he had a great interest in the history of ideas. He liked to read, listen to music and follow local sports teams, and enjoyed tennis, skiing and swimming, especially in the lap-lane pool he recently designed and installed in his home. He also enjoyed vacationing with his family in Nantucket. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Elizabeth Pritchard; a son, Michael Ueland of Cary, N.C.; daughters Mara Humphreys of Flourtown, and Anne Bailey of Cambridge, England; a sister, Clara Ueland of Minneapolis, and eight grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 11 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., in Chestnut Hill, with interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. William G. McKenna, financial analyst
Mr. McKenna retired in 2006 after a 40-year career as a financial analyst, most recently as an investment advisor at Walnut Asset Management. He also was active in his professional community as a member of the Institute for Chartered Financial Analysts, the Financial Analysts of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Securities Association, of which he was past president. He served for more than 20 years as a member of the investment committees of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill. A graduate of Southeast Catholic High School and Temple University, Mr. McKenna also pursued extended study in finance at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Joan Watson; a son, W. Thaddeus McKenna of Oreland; daughters Mary Jo “Jenifer” McKenna of Northampton, Mass., Deirdre Baliban of Louisville, Ky., Joan McKenna, Esq., of Richmond, Va., and Kathryn “Tina” McHale of Phoenix, Ariz., and six grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 11 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., in Chestnut Hill. Relatives and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Koller Funeral Home, 6835 Ridge Ave., in Roxborough. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. —WF
