![]() Mount hockey wins District 1 opener
After receiving a bye in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA field hockey playoffs last Monday, fifth-seeded Mount St. Joseph Academy won its first outing in the district tournament on Wednesday afternoon, turning back visiting number 12 Downingtown East High School, 1-0, on a first-half goal by senior Nicole Schuster. Since this was the last round of the single-elimination phase of the tournament, the Downingtown East Cougars put away their sticks for the season with a final record of 14-5, while the Magic moved on with their record now at 14-5. Most of the Mount’s opponents in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies compete in Class AA in the PIAA tournaments. One of the things that worked in the Magic’s favor in the seeding for the AAA tournament was a Sept. 4 non-league victory over Pennsbury High School, which went on to have a solid season. CHC men successful in soccer swansong
Chestnut Hill College’s players, coaches, and fans felt the final home soccer game of the season shouldn’t have gone into overtime at all, but at least things turned out well for the Griffins in the end. Sophomore Mike Gough’s goal early in a second OT period decided the Oct. 26 contest, as CHC posted a 1-0 non-conference victory against visiting Mountain Cats from the University of Pittsburgh’s Johnstown campus. Freshman goaltender Mike Goldstein made three saves to earn the shutout for Chestnut Hill, which raised its record to 3-11-2 overall while remaining 1-8-2 within the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Pitt-Johnstown returned to western Pennsylvania with a record of 6-11-1. The Griffins already had a number of scoring opportunities in the first half, but kept hitting everything but open space. After an offsides call halted a two-man breakaway by the hosts, CHC’s Carl Essenthier had a shot deflected by a visiting fullback, and later on he had another ball blocked by the keeper near the left post. Fellow freshman Ryan Lannutti had a chance right in the middle of the box but sent the ball into the goalie’s gut, and late in the opening period sophomore Billy Shulski also hit an opponent’s body instead of the net. Mount golf repeats as state runner-up
York, PA. — It seems to be an established law of nature; when the 36-hole PIAA State Golf Championships takes place in York each October, there will not be two days of good weather. One year, downpours caused the second day of competition to be cancelled entirely; another year, wind gusts of up to 50 mph raked the course. There was nothing so dramatic last Tuesday on the foggy second day of the 2009 event, but an intermittent cold drizzle chilled players, made green speeds difficult to judge, and generally caused balls to skid and skitter along the par-72 course at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort. Chestnut Hill Academy Football team continues to impress with convincing victory over the Penn Charter Quakers.
On the day before Halloween, when some students were probably planning for Mischief Night, the Blue Devils varsity football squad of Chestnut Hill Academy was all business as it dispatched the Quakers of Penn Charter 45-0 for its third straight Inter-Ac league football win. |
