Elizabeth Yanni

Elizabeth Yanni (Betty), Age 90 passed away February 27, 2010 surrounded by her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.  Everyone called her "Aunt Betty" even family, neighbors, and cousins. She grew up in Mt. Airy with her five brothers and two sisters and "off the boat" Italian parents.  Though her parents spoke strictly Italian, Aunt Betty learned English at school, listened to the radio and read Nancy Drew and Andy Hardy books.  She helped her parents with their country store through high school and graduated from Germantown High in 1933.  As a young adult, she worked at Victory Metal, Philco/Ford and Chestnut Hill Hospital. In her retired years, she was considered the "matriarch" of the family-- always familiarizing the cousins with the ins and outs of the family, emphasizing heritage and traditions such as-- Christmas Eve trivia and the Yanni picnic pinata.  Aunt Betty had a great sense for children: crocheting blankets for new babies, bringing young cousins together for swimming and watching all the children grow up.  She was a friend to many-- always smiling and sharing stories of her family and the old days.  She frequented the Trolley Car diner and regularly went on the senior citizen trips to Atlantic city casinos and plays in NYC.  She definitely had a sense of family closeness, sending birthday cards to her 100+  (& counting) nieces and nephews each year. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

She was the daughter of the late Antonio & Francesca (Mendecino) Yanni. Survived by her brother, Nicholas, of Ambler; predeceased by brothers Michael, Jesse, Frank & Jack, sisters Kathryn Amoroso, Mary Paranzino. Also survived by 13 nieces & nephews & many grandnieces & grandnephews. Friends may call Friday evening, 7-9 pm & Saturday 8:15-9:15 am at Angelone Funeral Home, 501 N. Easton Rd., Willow Grove, PA. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, 10:30 am, Holy Cross Church, 144 E. Mount Airy Ave., Philadelphia, followed by burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham. Donations in her memory to St. Joseph Villa, 110 W. Wissahickon Ave., Flourtown, PA 19031 would be appreciated by family.
