Customers flock to ‘soft’ opening of Weavers Way

Amidst the smells of fresh paint and produce, Weavers Way Co-op, 8424 Germantown Ave., opened its doors to customers on Saturday.

In what is referred to as a “soft” opening, the store saw more than 550 transactions on Saturday, and more than 700 on Sunday, according to store manager Kim Spelman-Hall.

“We had people lining the sidewalk wanting to come in days before we opened,” she said, adding that they were “blown away” by the opening.

With more than 100 new members signed up this weekend, Spelman-Hall said they were expecting this third store to expand membership quite a bit. Weavers Way Co-op also maintains stores in Mt. Airy and Ogontz.

I got into the journalism field at about the worst possible time.

The signs were there during my last year at Temple University’s graduate program in Journalism. I was taking a media management class with the program’s chair, Ed Trayes, and working on a project in which we kept fake stock portfolios with our investments made in media companies.

Mount lacrosse loses semifinal in overtime

Sudden-death overtime goals strike the losing team like a dagger in the heart, and this one was no different. Visiting Mount St. Joseph Academy never trailed during regulation play during last Monday’s Athletic Association of Catholic Academies lacrosse semifinal, but with the fifth tie of the afternoon, host Villa Maria was able to force the match into overtime.
