Hot Club of Philly brings ‘Gypsy Jazz’ to Pastorius

The Hot Club of Philadelphia.

The Hot Club of Philadelphia will jazz up Pastorius Park at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, as part of the 62nd annual Pastorius Park Free Concert Series.

Performing what it calls “Gypsy Jazz,” this quartet bases its style on Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stephan Grappelli.

Gypsy Jazz is the quartet’s take on the American jazz movement, with a blending of Grappelli and Reinhardt’s backgrounds. One of Reinhardt’s songs was recently chosen as the soundtrack to the iPad unveiling, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Hot Club of Philadelphia, named after “Quintette du Hot Club de France,” Reinhardt and Grapelli’s band, and started in 2001, is composed of four musicians: Jim Stagner on acoustic bass, Rich Yescalis on rhythm guitar, Barry Warhoftig on a Manouche Modele jazz guitar and Mark Campiglia on violin.

“It’s fast and unpretentious and swings like mad with a touch of Gypsy fire,” Warhoftig said of the band’s sound in a City Paper article in 2006. The group’s schedule consists of private parties, receptions and concerts, such as this one. Its new CD, “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams,” can be purchased on its website, www.hotclubphilly.com.

The Pastorius Park Concert Series takes place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Pastorius Park, Hartwell Lane and Abington Avenue, and is presented by the Chestnut Hill Community Association. The concert series is also being sponsored this summer by grants from the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and Chestnut Hill Hospital. All concerts in the series are free.

Previous performances included Sharon Little and Graham Parker. Future performances will feature FiddleKicks, Joanna Pascale, the McPeake Family and the Dukes of Destiny, The dates of these concerts can be found on the community association’s website, www.chestnuthill.org.

Fans of the Hot Club’s music will find them on Aug. 22 at the Cheltenham Township Summer Concert Series, the band’s next concert stop after Pastorius Park.
