![]() Local rowers race at Independence Day Regatta
Area rowers were back out on the Kelly Drive course last weekend, participating the annual Indepedence Day Regatta. Here, school team names are dropped and athletes race for a variety of rowing clubs, often in unusual combinations. A number of crews excelled, even as temperatures jumped from the low 80’s on Friday to the high 90’s by Sunday afternoon. Rowing under the banner of the Whitemarsh Boat Club, five Mount St. Joseph Academy students formed a successful crew that won the Junior Four event. Rising senior Meredith Bracken and juniors Darian DiCianno and Dana Lerro had spent the spring in the Magic’s varsity eight, and junior Rose Ehrlich and senior coxswain Maggie Rush came out of the lightweight eight, both highly-decorated boats. Mount comes back to nip McDevitt In last Tuesday’s nightcap game in the Lou Cappiella Summer Basketball League, the young Mount St. Joseph Academy squad never held a lead until it mattered most. Completing an MSJ comeback, freshman Regan Gallagher grabbed a loose ball close to the basket and flung up a shot with three seconds to go, and the Magic edged Bishop McDevitt High School, 30-29. Two of the Magic’s regular participants, incoming freshmen Gen Hagedorn and Carly Monzo, were on the grounds of Kenrick Recreation Center, but did not play in the Mount contest on the outside court since they were in the gym practicing with their AAU club team. However, since the league in which the MSJ varsity competes (Hatboro Horsham) has finished up for the summer, rising junior guard Bridget Higgins came out to play a Cappiello League game for the first time this season. |
