![]() Depleted Mounties fall prey to Eagles
On a day of record-setting heat the ranks were thin for Mount St. Joseph Academy’s summer basketball team, as just four rising sophomores and two freshmen turned out for last Tuesday’s bout against Norristown High School. After struggling on offense during the first period and winding up with a 12-2 deficit at the break, the Magic made a more respectable showing in the second half, but were unable to make a legitimate run at the lead as they lost to the Eagles, 32-13. The temperature was just backing down from the 100-degree mark, but Mount St. Joe’s shooting was ice cold as the entire first half slipped by without a single MSJ field goal. Often the Magic appeared to pass up some relatively easy shots in order to attempt something more difficult, such as try to drive for lay-ups against Norristown center Tyshay Britten, a 6’2” rising junior. Area hoopsters win in NCAA summer league Players from Northwest Philly colleges and area high school grads who are playing collegiate basketball elsewhere have been honing their skills in a well-established NCAA summer league. Quartered in the air-conditioned confines of LaSalle University’s Hayman Center for many seasons, the league moved to the steamy gym at Northeast High School several years ago, but now has switched to the Renegades AAU club gym near Willow Grove, a facility operated by former Springside School coach Steve Flynn. |
