![]() Springside Lions devoured by Bambies
With a number of their regular participants missing at last Tuesday’s summer hoops contest, the Springside Lions suffered their first loss in the Lou Cappiella League, falling to the Bambies of St. Hubert’s, 43-37. The Hill girls dug themselves a hole at the outset of the game and still trailed by 17 points with a little over four minutes to go. They rallied to within four points of the leaders before St. Hubert’s finished up with a pair of free throws. Springside was missing forwards Sydni Epps and Elana Roadcloud and guards Maddi Hinchey and Julia Schumacher, but the Lions still could’ve won the game if they hadn’t fallen far behind due to their bizarre shooting during the initial ten minutes. Often, they appeared to regard the ball as some sort of explosive device as they hastily flung it in the general direction of the basket. Displaying much better discipline and teamwork, the Bambies had built up a 9-0 advantage before junior Michelle Boggs got Springside on the board with a three-pointer from the top of the key. St. Hubert’s was up 14-3 not long after that, but the Lions played better in the waning minutes of the opening period. Boggs continued to score, and with a three-pointer from sophomore Michelle Cybularz and two free throws from junior Ashlee Hale, the gap narrowed to seven points (19-12) by halftime. Springside missed four free throws as the second round got underway, and the Bambies scored the first six points of the period for a 25-12 lead. Later, St. Hubert’s was ahead 38-21 when Springside began its final rally. Cybularz canned two more three-pointers and Boggs booked two lay-ups and a free throw to tighten the score to 38-32 with under a minute to go. The Lions now had to foul for ball possession, and the Bambies garnered three points from a pair of one-and-one’s to make it 41-32. With 30 seconds left Springside senior Brenna Coll was fouled on a successful lay-up, and she hit the free throw, as well. The Lions stole the ball back, and when Pownall put in a short jumper with 16 seconds left to play, the score stood at 41-37. Awarded a third one-and-one opportunity, St. Hubert’s collected both points with 14 seconds remaining, and Springside was unable to score again. Boggs and Cybularz finished with 16 and nine points, respectively, for the Lions, who also received six points from Coll, four from Pownall, and two from Hale.
