John Colgan-Davis and Arlyn Wolters lead the Dukes of Destiny in the final Pastorius Park concert of the summer.

Gathered around white lawn chairs just west of the Pastorious Park concert area, a crowd of approximately 140 enjoyed the 12th annual police, firefighter and postal worker picnic. Sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association, the picnic honors the community’s public servants.
This year, as in past years, the picnic coincided with the final concert of the 2010 season. Local blues band Dukes of Destiny performed to the second largest crowd of the season with an estimated 950 in attendance.
But before the first notes were struck, picnic goers were treated to a buffet of local delights and homemade goodies. CHCA board members made or donated several items, and tickets sales brought the revenue to purchase wraps from Weaver’s Way and pasta and potato salad from Top of the Hill market. The picnic is free for the police, firefighters and postal workers and their families.
This week’s concert marked the end of the season. This year’s series drew more than 4,425 residents and raised a total of $4,434.30 between the fishbowl collections and concession stand sales. The money raised goes toward the overall cost of the concert series, which is subsidized by donations from the Chestnut Hill Hospital and the Chestnut Hill Community Fund.
