The steady wave of game day buzz grew throughout the week as families settled in on Water Tower bleachers from weeknight to weekend Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club (CHYSC) games. Junior Baseball players got into early season action—with volunteer coaches supporting the teams—many of whom have their own children on the field.
Quickball Friendly Scrimmages and Minors Angels practice were the Saturday conclusion of a great week with a good lineup of games and practices.
On Tuesday, April 23, travel soccer coaches doubled as baseball coaches, leading the Mt. Airy White Sox to beat the Rookie Mudcats 8-6.
Switching from soccer cleats to baseball cleats, and then again to basketball high tops, is a common move for CHYSC players, as many kids play multiple sports. This season a Lightning Lacrosse player was thrilled to have just enough time to grab a donut post-game and catch her brother out on Field 2 with the Minors Angels.
Quickball is particularly popular. “Quickball is perfect for this younger age group. They are engaged and busy, even in just week three the teams are progressing and everyone’s having fun,” said parent Bri Potter, who was acting as an assistant Lookouts coach for the day.
On Thursday, April 25, the Chestnut Hill Minors Dodgers team won a pitchers’ duel 2-1 over the Mount Airy Dodgers.
“In an amazing display of pitching, Dodgers’ pitchers Conner Dalby, Grant Ramer, Max Jaffe, and Jake Greenberg combined for a one-hitter over six innings,” said Minors League Dodgers coach Ryan. “For one of the critical runs of the game, Dodgers’ player Jack Neducsin slammed a triple and then tried for an inside-the-park homer but got caught in a rundown. Jack Neducsin was able to wiggle out of the rundown by baiting the third baseman to throw high, allowing him to slide into home for the difference-making run. With the win, the Chestnut Hill Dodgers remain undefeated for the season.”
One umpire, who asked to be called by his just first name of Marvin, concluded Thursday evening with his take on the Dodgers game:
“With these older kids, it is very competitive and yet it is also such a nice crowd. Just very respectful, is how I would describe the players – and their coaches too. You can tell they appreciate all the learning being shared with the players.”
