Autism discussion on April 20

Posted

A panel of experts will discuss the talents and challenges of nonspeaking children and adults with autism and also consider the stereotypes that hinder education and employment on April 20 at Johnson House Historic Site in Germantown.

“Busting Myths: Autistic Self-Advocates Speak Out” will explore the world of more than 500,000 nonspeaking children and 1.6 million nonspeaking adults with autism, aiming to demystify misconceptions and raise awareness.

The event is co-sponsored by Johnson House and Spellers Empowering Education for Non-speakers (SEEN), a Pennsylvania-based advocacy group comprised of nonspeakers with autism and Down syndrome who use a letterboard or keyboard to communicate. Their goal is to share insight about nonspeakers’ abilities and encourage them to communicate using their method of choice to enable an age-appropriate academic education.

The discussion is 2 to 4 p.m. Johnson House is at 6306 Germantown Ave. To RSVP, visit info@johnsonhouse.org.
