In 1989, a call in the middle of the night shattered the peace of Dr. John Scanlon's life: Fire had destroyed his medical practice. The Chestnut Hill community was there to support him.
In 1989, a call in the middle of the night shattered the peace of Dr. John Scanlon's life. The news was devastating. His medical practice, a place where he dedicated his life to heal and care for others, had been destroyed by a raging fire. The loss was immeasurable and the future uncertain.
But what he didn't know then was that this tragedy would ignite a flame of hope in the Chestnut Hill community. People rallied around him, sending love and support in the form of food, money, and selfless acts of kindness. A local pharmacist, who knew the true value of a medical practice, went above and beyond to help save Dr. Scanlon's important records and supplies. And two local physicians, in a display of unshakable generosity, offered him the use of their own offices to continue his practice, free of charge.
This outpouring of support was only the beginning of Dr. Scanlon's journey. He found himself not only rebuilding his practice, but also growing roots in the Chestnut Hill community. He served on committees, volunteered his time, and got to know his neighbors. His hard work, dedication, and the support of the community led him to his current position as the Chief Medical Officer at Chestnut Hill Hospital.
Dr. Scanlon's journey was a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and the transformative power of a supportive community. He never forgot the kindness and generosity shown to him during his darkest hour and has since been motivated by a deep desire to give back and show his gratitude. He shared his story with the Chestnut Hill Community Association as a reminder of the positive impact that a united community can have on individuals.
The doctor realized that in times of need, the Chestnut Hill community will always be there to support and care for its members, and be a shining example of the spirit of community and the importance of coming together to help one another.
“And so, by contributing to the CHCA Annual Appeal, you will be contributing to the values that make the community of Chestnut Hill SPECIAL…kindness, caring, compassion and a desire to support those in their time of need,” Scanlon said. “I will be forever grateful!”
