CHYSC leagues launch Water Tower baseball

The Water Tower Baseball fields are in full swing with three leagues of 10 Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club Junior Baseball teams in a smooth rotation of practices and games.

CHYSC Rookies and CHYSC Minors have begun 2024 interleague games with Mount Airy Baseball, a community partnership that brings neighboring friends together.

The Rookie League started their interleague games on April 9, with the Mudcats losing 4-2 against the Mount Airy Red Sox. Mudcat Jack Ambrose hit a bullet down the third-base line for an inside-the-park home run on his first at-bat.

The Rookie Drillers battled rain and wind on April 11 to defeat the Mount Airy Rockies in dramatic fashion. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Drillers Eli Hellmann drove in two runs to secure a walk-off victory for the Drillers. Eli Hellman, Ansel Sgro and Wiley Daniels all went 3-3. William Salmon, Tripp White and Scott Powell also contributed with hits.

On April 16, the Chestnut Hill Dodgers of the Minor League hosted their first home game of the season against one of their cross-neighborhood rivals, the Mount Airy Orioles. Starting pitcher Jake Greenberg pitched masterfully over the first two innings and recorded four strikeouts and allowed only one run. Max Jaffe took care of business at the plate by slamming a two-run triple that one-hopped to the fence in the first inning. Jordan Chase then slammed the door on the Orioles by finishing the game by striking out six over two innings without allowing a run. The vaunted Chestnut Hill Dodgers defeated the Mount Airy Orioles 16-1 with efficient hitting throughout the lineup.

On April 20, a series of Quickball matchups included Lookouts vs. Bees, Mudcats vs. Sea Dogs, and Doubledays vs. the Drillers, with each scrimmage followed by a traditional race to the CHYSC snack bar.

Later that day, CHYSC club games included Rookies on Field 1; Drillers vs. Mudcats with the Minors on Field 2, and Angels vs. Dodgers. The Drillers defeated the Mudcats 8-7 in a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Wiley Daniels drove in Axel Johnson for the game-winning run. Every Drillers player had a base hit.
