50 people braved windy, cold weather in the teens to rally outside the McDonald's on Chelten Avenue in support of raising the minimum wage. Raise the Wage PA! convener John Meyerson stoked the emotions of the crowd with his speech. He recounted how he made good money 40 years ago, working just down the street as a retail clerk and member of the United Food and Commercial Workers.
"We had three department stores on Chelten Avenue," he said. "We had three grocery stores. We had restaurants.. Those businesses did not close because of high wages. No! They closed because of low wages."
Other sponsors of the rally included POWER (a coalition of faith communities working on justice issues), the Unitarian Society of Germantown and State Senator Art Haywood.
