A capital campaign to restore the Chestnut Hill Community Center, 8419 Germantown Ave. continues. The board of the Community Centre launched the campaign earlier this year with the goal of raising $1.75 million to restore the building, which has been part of Chestnut Hill for more than 200 years.

The historically certified building has numerous repairs, replacements and code issues that need to be addressed to bring it up to date and ADA compliant, board members have said.

John Milner Architects, known for its historic preservation work, was selected for the restoration work, which includes meeting the building’s historic registration needs, eliminating code violations, installing a modern HVAC system, adding energy efficiencies, replacing the porch, adding ADA compliant bathrooms, an elevator and an ADA outside entrance. The building’s usable square footage will be increased to allow it to become financially self-sustaining in the future. Co-working spaces, conference rooms and a multi-purpose room will be added and outside public areas will be enhanced to serve as a public gathering space convenient to Germantown Avenue and parking. The Community Centre intends to make the improvements to ensure the building will be great shape for at least another 200 years.
