Community Writers Series Online:  Monuments, Walls and the Heart of Democracy

Posted

Join the Friends of the Free Library and Germantown Friends School virtually for a Community Writers Series evening with Paul Farber (’01), the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Monument Lab, as he is interviewed by his mentor and friend André Robert Lee (’89) on September 29 at 7 p.m.

Farber will discuss his two books – “A Wall of Our Own: An American History of the Berlin Wall” and “Monument Lab: Creative Speculations for Philadelphia”  and share reflections and analysis about the role monuments play in commemorating leaders, events, movements, and history.

Does the erection or removal of statues and murals, like those of Frank Rizzo and Christopher Columbus, change our understanding of history and that for future generations? How has public petition and protest influenced these creations, today and in the past? How do monuments ignite learning and change?
