For those who care about democracy, GOP candidates are a risky choice

The news that Georgia will be investigating its legislators has put Georgia on my mind.

In Pennsylvania, we know little about all the people who worked in the shadows to support the massive effort to disrupt election results and subvert the will of the voters. They were never condemned or investigated by their GOP legislative colleagues. l

Perhaps few are above suspicion. Some Pennsylvania GOP legislators  signed Texas’ amicus brief against the Pennsylvania election results and lined up to be false electors. They met quietly with (Rudolph) Giuliani.

Are any of these people running for election again in November? Are there first-time candidates with the same inclination to use power to take away our votes? We voters do not know.

Barely 100 days until we elect governor, senator, and both state and federal legislators, we know damn little about who we are voting for.

The exception might be Mastriano, until now the most transparent about his beliefs and intentions. He was recently caught scrubbing the racist, anti-science and anti-abortion stink from his words and behavior.

I looked back through Scott Perry’s long political career to discover what his constituents would have known of his extreme, anti-democratic orientation. I could find nothing in his decades in politics until he assumed leadership of The Freedom Caucus. He interfered with the Justice Department and wrote false letters to states, as has been well chronicled by the January 6th Commission.

I suspect the good people of the 10th District, including Harrisburg and York, just didn’t know what he would do.

For myself, I’ve come to the sad conclusion that I will vote for only Democratic candidates. They are the only ones I can be sure have not been tainted by the stench of Trump's anti-democratic ideas and actions.

If you are thinking of voting for Republican candidates, be very careful. You can’t be sure what you will get.
