On Thursday, Feb. 28, the Germantown Friends School Community Writers Series will welcome Meredith Broussard, author of “Artificial Unintelligence: How Computers Misunderstand the World,” for a reading and discussion. Broussard’s book explores how future historians will read today’s news on tomorrow’s computers and challenges the assumption that computers always “get it right.”
Broussard is an assistant professor at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University and a Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence in investigative reporting, with a particular interest in using data analysis for social good. A former features editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Broussard has also worked as a software developer at AT&T Bell Labs and the MIT Media Lab. Her articles and essays have appeared in The Atlantic, Harper’s, Slate, and other media outlets.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Friends Free Library (5418 Germantown Ave.) on the GFS campus and will include a book signing and light refreshments.
