Help us pick the best holiday light displays in Chestnut Hill

It’s that time of year once again to decorate your home for the holidays. Based on my time driving down local streets, I can see that many of you have already done so.

I have to admit that I’ve always admired the ambitious and enthusiastic holiday light decorators out there. I’ve never been able to muster the energy it takes to, one, get an early start on my decorating or, two, test my local power grid with enough lights to be seen from the surface of the moon. I’m glad, though, that there are people who are into it. It makes this time of year a lot more interesting. And the bolder the better in my book.

This year, the Local is hosting two separate contests for readers in an effort to celebrate not only the most ambitious of decorators, but also the most classy. To succeed, though, we really need your participation. We need you to make nominations and, more importantly, to vote. Let those who do have the energy and creativity to decorate their home in a special way know they’re appreciated.

Home Decorating Contest

The first contest is a simple home decorating contest. Entrants to this contest simply need to go online where they can upload a photo of a decorated house, preferably at night when the lights can really be appreciated.

This contest is being sponsored by local contractor Gen 3 Electrical & HVAC. The company has agreed to give the winner of the contest $500 toward any electrical or HVAC service or repair.

That photo will be added to a gallery where other visitors to the site can vote on their favorite. Voting will remain open through Dec. 19, after which we will determine the winner and publish the winning photo on the front page of the Dec. 26 issue.

Be sure to enter your own home or the home of your favorite neighborhood light display.

Storefront Decorating Contest

This is the second year we’ve run a contest to recognize the holiday decorating efforts and talents of Germantown Avenue shopkeepers.

Sponsored this year by Bowman Properties, readers can go online to vote for their favorite shop window displays in five separate categories: Most Festive, Most Elegant, Most Whimsical, Best at Night and Overall Favorite.

This contest is also open to voting through Dec. 19. Nominated shops include Artisans on the Avenue, Isabella Sparrow, SL8 Hair Lounge and Quelque Chose, among others.

What makes this contest worthwhile for anyone who participates is the chance to win a $100 Chestnut Hill Business District gift certificate, which can be used at almost every shop in the neighborhood.

So, again, we need your participation. Enter your home, enter another home, vote in both contests and, if you back a particular contestant, campaign for votes on their behalf.

Let the best light displays win.
