Houston School and SCH Academy partner for summer learning program

The Henry H. Houston Elementary School in Mt. Airy and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (SCH) in Chestnut Hill are pleased to announce that the two schools have formed a partnership to bring a branch of the nationally recognized Horizons program to the SCH campus starting this summer.

Established in 1964, Horizons is a national network of 60+ tuition-free summer programs that deliver high-quality academic and enrichment support for students, Pre-K through high school, from under-resourced communities. Students begin Horizons the summer after Kindergarten and return each summer through 8th Grade.

This summer, qualifying Kindergarten students from Henry Houston School will come to the SCH campus for six weeks in July and August where they will participate in a variety of educational, enrichment, and recreational activities to help them strengthen their reading and math skills and have fun.

“We are so pleased to be partnering with Houston’s principal, LeRoy Hall Jr., and his team to make this excellent program available to Houston students,” said SCH Head of School Stephen L. Druggan. “Our mission as a school is to encourage unbounded curiosity and independent thought, and I can’t think of a better program or better partner school to align with in fulfilling these goals for these students.”

“Providing this opportunity for our students to grow and keep fresh academically over the summer will enable them to enter each new year in stride and avoid the typical summer learning slide that is so detrimental, especially for students from under-served communities,” said Principal Hall.

Horizons’ well-established track record of academic support ensures that participating students will experience measurable improvement in their reading and math skills during the summer, but more importantly, their long-term participation in the program will instill in them a joy of learning and the inspiration to realize their dreams. According to the organization’s national office, 97% of Horizons’ students graduate from high school and 91% go on to college or post-secondary training.

More detailed information about the program, the requirements for participating, and the application process, are being shared with Houston Kindergarten families, and Zoom information sessions are scheduled for late March and early April. More information about Horizons at SCH and ways to celebrate and support this new community partnership may be found at sch.org/horizons

“We are eager to offer this unique opportunity for our Houston students,” Hall said. “It will be the start of many summers of promise, progress, and transformation.”
