As the new season gets underway for the Blue Devils, second-year head coach Bartley Jeannoute should be able to put together a strong inside game with athletes focused on the game of basketball.
Standing just over six feet tall, senior Zahkiyyah Frazier had been on the varsity team since she was a freshman, and 5'10" forward Zoe Thompson emerged as one of the Blue Devils' best players last winter as a ninth-grader. SCH also has a six-foot eighth-grader playing up with the upper school varsity. This is Taylor Williams, who is already receiving college interest.
Guard Kate Jaconetti is the only other senior on the team and, like Frazier, she earned a spot on the SCH varsity as a freshman. The lone junior for the Blue Devils is Layla Shands, who unfortunately will miss most of the season due to injury. She was already playing varsity softball for Springside as an eighth-grader.
In contrast, there is a large sophomore class to accompany Thompson. Sammi Acuna, Rae Hartner, Scarlett Spector, and Olivia Weissman were all members of the SCH JV team last winter. Two 10th-graders new to the school are New Jersey's Pia Swamy and Abington High School transfer Florence Ajunwa, who plays for the Philadelphia Belles AAU team.
The two freshmen on the varsity roster, Kendall Schnee and Sidney Smith, played on the Blue Devils' middle school varsity team last season.
With growing familiarity with Jeannoute's coaching system, the improvement of returning players, and the addition of new talent, it seems a sure bet that the Blue Devils will improve upon their results from last year, when they finished 2-10 in the Inter-Ac League and 8-15 overall.
