Jews across the Northwest are preparing for the High Holidays, the holiest time of the year when families celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
The 10-day period begins at sundown on Oct. 2 with Rosh Hashanah and concludes with the end of Yom Kippur at sundown on Oct. 12. The focus of the period is repentance, admission of sins, and atonement.
To observe the holiday, synagogues and organizations around the region are hosting dinners and special events that amplify the themes of the holiday.

Chabad of the Northwest is hosting a Pre-Rosh Hashanah Challah Bake when attendees can shape, bake and take home their own new year challah. The challah bake is 7 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 26. Chabad is also hosting a Rosh Hashanah dinner at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 2. RSVP for both events at chabadnwp.org/hh.
At Germantown Jewish Centre in Mt. Airy, the synagogue’s expansive list of High Holiday observances will include a Selichot musical service on Sat., Sept. 28; a Rosh Hashanah Community Dinner on Oct. 2, a Kol Nidre food drive on Friday, Oct. 11 and Yom Kippur services on Sat., Oct. 12. Congregation Or Ami in Lafayette Hill will host services including a Tashlich observance at 4 p.m., Wed. Oct 2. when participants toss bread crumbs or pebbles into a nearby body of water to symbolize the casting off sins from the past year. For information, visit or-ami.org.
