Just what the doctor ordered

Posted

Regarding the article on Rise Gatherings (“Antidote for stress: 'Forest Bathing' washes away cares,” Oct. 22), I did not hesitate to register for Rise Gathering’s forest bathing experience. It sounded like just what the doctor ordered. I started my two-plus hour journey with a heavy heart, low energy and a grim outlook on the future. I had signed up in part to honor my dad on what would have been his 87th birthday.

I thought maybe I’d find a connection to him in the sunlight shining through the trees. I hugged trees, leaned my bare feet against a tree trunk and searched for the sun. Some may wonder why you’d pay to walk through a forest for a few hours. I can tell you it was worth every penny.

Rachel and Tami really brought the energy and inspiration I needed to start the walk. While it is a private experience with no rules, they offered prompts along the way. No one talked. Phones were discouraged. It was just me and the forest.

While I didn’t come out of the forest with a great revelation or fewer problems, I came out a little lighter and more hopeful for what the future may bring. And I walked away with a reminder that my dad is always with me. Forest bathing should be required for all to lighten the load we are all carrying during these difficult times.
