Pennsylvania was an absolutely essential element in the results of the recent presidential election, and now we Pennsylvanians have a second chance to help make a difference in another, far-reaching, way. Pennsylvania can join 10 other states, including all our neighbors, by becoming members of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) as Gov. Wolf has proposed.
RGGI was founded in 2008 as a multi-state program to set a cap on pollution from power plants, reducing the cap every year. There are various steps that are taken, but the result is cleaner and cleaner air. From 2008-2018 carbon pollution decreased 47% for RGGI states. Besides reducing pollution and combating climate change, which we all now know is essential, there are direct financial benefits. In RGGI states the price of electricity has declined by 5.7%, and there is money available for clean energy programs.
Pennsylvania is the 4th largest greenhouse gas producer in the country. This is not a designation we should want to maintain. Now Pennsylvania can help provide an environmentally cleaner and healthier future and take a huge step forward by joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Let this happen both for us and for future generations
