Plymouth Meeting Friend’s School’s third and fourth graders put on their first circus performance in front of a live audience since 2019 on May 13th. “Behind My Mask: A Fairytale” was a return to the fanciful spectacle that the PMFS Circus is known for; weaving together story and the circus arts.
Students had been working hard since the fall, learning to ride unicycles (both regular-sized and a 5 foot tall one, aptly referred to as “the giraffe”), walk the tightrope, juggle, and jump from globe to globe (picture large exercise balls).
They also learned aerial skills from Secret Circus instructor Jackie Zalewski, who came to PMFS each week to coach students on this year’s aerial equipment, the lyra and the rope.
“That performance was so impressive,” said Caroline Ashurst, whose family is new to PMFS this year. “[It] was so inspiring and morale boosting. And I was so impressed by how confident those kids were!”
“What they do each year is astounding,” said Julie Hirsch Waxman, whose great-niece was one of the performers. “ I haven’t seen anything else like it anywhere. It really says a lot about the support and care these kids receive at this school.”
