Mount golf goes to 7-0 with win at St. Martin's

In Athletic Association of Catholic Academies golf competition, Mount St. Joseph Academy remains on a roll, raising its record to 7-0 with a 217-251 victory over its closest competitor in the league, Villa Maria Academy. The MSJ Magic hosted the match last Tuesday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's St. Martin's Course.

Mount St. Joe is the 19-time defending AACA champion, having won the title every year since the title was established.

The weather was sunny for the event, but the temperature gave the day a true fall feel, with a bit of a breeze.

When the first foursome finished the nine-hole par-35 circuit, the Magic already had a good leg up on the visiting Hurricanes. Gabi Courtney, one of the senior co-captains, turned in a score of 43, and sophomore Jewel Schaefer, the only freshman to be a full-time varsity player last season, came around in 41 strokes.

The top five rounds from each team's eight participants make up the final team score, and a 46 from Riley Mulhern and a 51 from Charlotte Becker would be included in Villa Maria's team total.

The Mounties counted both of their scores out of the second foursome, a pair of 46's produced by senior captain Emma McGrath and junior Taylor Della Carpini. The Hurricanes figured in a 47 from Ava McCaughan, and ultimately discarded the score of their other golfer in this group.

In the third quartet, the Mount's O'Brien sisters, Grace (a senior) and Mia (a sophomore) each shot respectable scores of 53 (better than half of the Hurricanes' scores), but the Magic would not need to use these figures in their team tally. Villa, meanwhile counted in a 50 by Kaitlynne Jones and a 57 by Morgan Prasalowicz, which eventually locked in the 'Canes' team total at 251.

Two ninth-graders were playing in the fourth foursome for the host team. The Mount did not have to count the round of Gillan Holt, because her partner Amelia Nace came in with a 41 to tie with Schaefer for the best round of the afternoon. Nace has two older athletic sisters (one still at the Mount, and another who has graduated), but neither plays golf.

Looking past the league to District 1 play, seventh-year MSJ head coach John Mischler noted that Spring-Ford High School has a very strong squad this season. Jules Quinones, a former Mount parent like Mischler, is back for another go as assistant coach.
