Mount St. Joseph Academy's tennis team travelled to Gwynedd Mercy Academy on Sept. 26 to begin a key series within the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies.
Both the Mount Magic and the GMA Monarchs had won all of their previous league matches, and due to a postponement earlier in the season, both head-to-head bouts between the teams were scheduled for last week.
Mount St. Joe, the seven-time defending AACA champion, won the first meeting on Monday by a 3-2 score, taking two singles contests and one doubles match.
After three matches had been completed, the Mounties held a 2-1 advantage. Senior Megan Martin won the third singles bout over Gwynedd junior Annie Boyle, 6-3, 6-0, and at first doubles, Magic senior Claire Costigan and freshman Maeve Kelly won two 6-2 sets against seniors Charlotte Ormond and Bebe Lemanowicz of the Monarchs.
At first singles, the Mount's Beth Murray succumbed to fellow senior Elise Hill, 1-6, 2-6. The pair had a number of long rallies, and Hill prevailed in most of them.
On the adjacent court, senior Dylan Conroy would clinch the victory for Mount St. Joseph. She won by 6-3 scores in both sets to overcome GMA senior Olivia Spector, giving the Magic their third "W" in the team scoring.
Gwynedd junior Angelina Splendido and sophomore Mia Urie made it a close outcome overall by winning the second doubles match, 6-2, 6-4, against senior Emma Stromberg and freshman Paige Mattle of the visiting side.
UPDATE: On Thursday at the Mount, Gwynedd reversed Monday's result in the first doubles flight to beat the Magic, 3-2. Both teams still have several more league matches ahead of them.
