Mount St. Joseph Academy volleyball players have been keeping a particularly close eye on changing Covid-19 regulations, since they're engaged in the only indoor sport among the school's six fall offerings.
For the actual matches in particular, proper distancing must be observed among spectators. The school has been marking off zones on the bleachers in the gym, and keeping up with the latest rules regarding indoor gatherings. The latest instructions from Harrisburg, issued on October 6, mandated a limit of 20 percent of a facility's maximum legal capacity for indoor events.
The Mount team itself has seen a number of personnel changes, with the departure of the six seniors on last year's team leaving some gaps on the court. The Magic have seven varsity players returning this fall, starting with their two captains. Allie McKnight is a setter, and Viviana Carrasco is a middle blocker and hitter who brings a six-foot frame to the front row.
The other returning seniors are defensive specialists Ainsley Muhl and Nicole Uzzo, and the veterans now in the junior class are middle Olivia Esposito and outside hitter M.K. Fielke. Now a sophomore, outside hitter Daphne Mond was the only freshman on the MSJ varsity last season.
This year senior Emily Sadorf, an outside hitter, has moved up to accompany her four classmates on the varsity squad. The juniors joining Esposito and Fielke are setter/defender Dylan Flannery, middle Katie Geatens, and setter Ashleigh Hopkins. Two 10th-grade additions to the varsity are middle Georgia Pickett and defender Katie Webb. Right side Gillian Manas is the lone freshman on the varsity roster.
Amy Bergin is back for her fourth season as the Mount's head coach, and she'll be assisted by MSJ alum Mary Kate Steinmetz ('10), who also teaches at the school. Experienced club coach Jerry Abdalla, the father of two former Mount St. Joe players, is running the JV team and helping out on varsity.
