Philadelphia attorney and Mt. Airy resident Howard Langer, 74, has won the National Jewish Book Award for his debut novel "The Last Dekrepitzer," published by Cresheim Press.

Released in September 2024, the book has received critical acclaim. Langer expressed surprise at winning the prestigious award.

“I was stunned when I received the call telling me of the award,” said Langer. “My dream was to write a novel. But after I’d written it, I spent two years trying to find an agent or publisher and then to win this award. I really have no words.”

The novel follows the last heir of a fictional Polish Hasidic dynasty who is discovered playing blues music in a New York subway station in 1962. Langer, who practices law and teaches at the University of Pennsylvania's Carey Law School, wrote the book in his seventies after a two-year search for a publisher.
