Two people perished in a house fire on the 500 block of Brinton Street on Thursday, March 27, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD).
Fire companies arrived at approximately 5:07 p.m. to heavy fire and smoke coming from a three-story twin home. The two bodies were later recovered in the rubble.
“After assessing the situation, it was determined that the structure was unsafe and could collapse. The incident commander declared "all-hands" status, placing all present companies into service, and ordered all members to evacuate and mount an exterior attack on the fire,” a spokesperson for the fire department said.
Shortly after firefighters arrived, a part of the house collapsed and the fire spread to the adjoining home. Raising a second alarm, the PFD brought more than 110 members to the scene, placing the fire under control at 8:12 p.m. PECO, PGW, and L&I were all called to the scene for safety reasons.
One PFD member was injured during this response and taken to the hospital in stable condition but has since been released.
The next day, fire officials confirmed that two bodies were recovered from the rubble, with a medical examiner yet to determine the cause of death.
The origin of the fire is still being investigated.
