The work of acclaimed artist Claire Downes Whitehurst will be featured in an exhibit starting Feb. 1 at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Roxborough.
"Winterbloom," a solo exhibition highlighting new works by Whitehurst, showcases the artist's vibrant abstract compositions inspired by natural forms and patterns. The exhibition was curated by Heather Moqtaderi, the center’s interim director, and will run through March 29.
Whitehurst will discuss her work as part of an artist chat during the opening reception for the show at The Schuylkill Center. The reception will be 1 to 3 p.m. The artist chat will be at 2 p.m. Whitehurst, whose work has appeared in New American Paintings and Oxford American, combines her background in painting, printmaking, and sculpture to explore the intersection of Southern landscapes, queer space, and religious iconography. The artist, who conducted research on cave paintings in France's Dordogne region as a Stanley Fellowship recipient, will also lead a workshop on March 1.
The exhibition is open to the public, with walk-in visitors welcome. For event updates and weather-related announcements, visitors can register through the Center's website.
The center is at 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road. For information visit schuylkillcenter.org.
