West Mt. Airy Neighbors (WMAN) is launching the "Old House Care 2025 Workshop Series," a trio of educational sessions aimed at assisting homeowners in preserving historic properties. These workshops will be held at Cliveden of the National Trust, located at 98 E. Cliveden St., with sessions taking place in the Carriage House at Morton and Cliveden streets.

The series kicks off on Tuesday, April 22, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, with "Masonry: Mortar and Brick." This workshop will help homeowners understand the components of traditional mortars and demonstrate color matching, mortar mixes and re-pointing techniques.

The second session, "Roofing," is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Details for this workshop are forthcoming.

The final workshop, "Electrical Systems in Historic Houses," will take place on Tuesday, May 6,  from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Participants will learn about the national electrical code, electrical safety and older wiring systems commonly found in many buildings in Northwest Philadelphia.

WMAN's Historic Preservation Initiative emphasizes the economic, environmental and community benefits of preserving historic structures. Online registration is recommended due to limited space. A suggested donation of $10 per workshop or $25 for all three is encouraged, which can be made using the "Make a Donation" field during registration.

The workshops will be led by experienced professionals:

  • Ray Tschoepe: With a master's degree in historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania and over 30 years in the field, Tschoepe serves as director of conservation at the Fairmount Park Conservancy and teaches building conservation at Bucks County Community College.

  • Andrew Staples: Currently the conservation supervisor at the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Staples holds an MA in archaeology of buildings from the University of York and has a background in plumbing and heating.

  • Steve Kurtz: He brings over 50 years of experience in residential roofing services in Northwest Philadelphia and beyond.

  • John Siemiarowski: An electrical industry veteran since 1964, Siemiarowski founded Electrical Wizardry, Inc. in 2004, focusing on older homes primarily in Northwest Philadelphia.
