Several alums from area schools found themselves in the national spotlight last Sunday, when the University of North Carolina and Northwestern University played for the NCAA Division I championship in women's lacrosse.

Delaney Sweitzer, a graduate of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, was the starting goalie for Northwestern, and one of the attackers for the Wildcats was Aditi Foster, a freshman out of Penn Charter. The roster for Northwestern also included sophomore Alexis Ventresca, a Norwood Fontbonne Academy graduate who played high school lacrosse at Episcopal Academy.

The North Carolina squad includes junior Darcy Felter, a junior who is a Penn Charter alum. UNC completed a perfect 22-0 season by defeating Northwestern, 12-8, in the title game on Sunday.

Felter did not appear in the finals, but did play in a 20-4 rout of the University of Florida in the national semifinals two days earlier. She appeared in 17 games this season, recording seven goals and one assist.

Sweitzer's path to Northwestern was a complicated one. Right out of Springside Chestnut Hill, she began her college career at the University of Southern California along with her twin sister, Savannah. The sisters then transferred to Syracuse University, where Delaney became a starter.

After earning her undergraduate degree at Syracuse, Sweitzer transferred to Northwestern as a graduate student, with one year of athletic eligibility remaining.

She became the Wildcats' starter in goal, and in Northwestern's 12-11 national semifinal win over Boston College on May 23, she made eight saves. Two days later in the championship game, she made 17 saves, as opposed to eight for her opposite number from UNC.

North Carolina led 12-7 going into the last minute of play, and the final score of 12-8 was locked in when PC grad Foster scored for the Wildcats with 55 seconds remaining. She had an assist earlier in the game, and she had also scored a goal during the semifinal match with BC.

Foster played in a total of 19 games this spring, scoring 15 goals and handing out five assists.

Ventresca, the Norwood grad, appeared in 16 games for Northwestern, recording three goals and two assists.
