What is it about Chestnut Hill that gives it that “small town in a big city” feeling and ambiance?
More than anything, it’s our special array of businesses on or near the Avenue, providing every item or service a person – or even our furry friends – could possibly need. There’s really no reason to search beyond the stretch of Germantown Avenue that winds its way northwest from Cresheim Valley Drive to Rex Avenue. We have it all: shops for your garden, shops for your shirts, shops for your groceries (even desserts). You get the picture.
We run into neighbors and make new acquaintances as we go about the business of partaking in the communal commercial experiences that are abundant here on the Hill. After our shopping bags are full, we gather with friends and family to enjoy food and drinks at one of the many restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and taverns.
The Chestnut Hill Community Association and the Chestnut Hill Local want to thank the business community for the sense of place they provide. This year, the Better Together campaign has invited the business community to support the two organizations that celebrate, inform, and bring critical issues to the attention of residents and businesspeople. Four local establishments – Weavers Way, Cosimo’s Pizza Cafe, McNally’s Tavern, and Chestnut Hill Brewing Company have answered our call and are devoting a percentage of their revenues to the Better Together campaign.
“Better Together Week on the Hill” invites you to shop at Weavers Way Next Door on Saturday, January 25th, to get lunch or dinner at Cosimo’s Pizza Cafe on Monday, January 27th, dine at McNally’s Tavern on Wednesday, January 29th, and to join the party at Chestnut Hill Brewing Company, 5 – 8 PM on Thursday, January 30th. A percentage of guest checks and sales will be donated to the Better Together campaign by these generous businesses.
Weavers Way Chestnut Hill is now a 15-year-old community institution after expanding from Mount Airy in 2010. With stores in Ambler and Germantown, the co-op is a great asset to Philadelphia’s Northwest and beyond. Everything is responsibly sourced and fresh. Just look at that kale! Best of all, much of the fruit and produce comes from local farms operated by Weavers Way. Consider creating your vitamin and supplement, health and wellness shopping list and head to Next Door on Jan. 25. Visit the website for the whole story.
Cosimo’s Pizza Café has been owned and operated by Enzo Mandarano since 2004. Originally from Calabria, Italy, Enzo’s life and location changed after meeting his wife, Antonella, when he was 19. Their son, Francesco, is the face you will most likely see these days when you stop in for pizza or one of their homemade soups. According to Francesco, who hopes to take over the business some day, Cosimo’s strives to be the best, using quality ingredients and a big helping of family pride. Stop in on Monday, January 27th to support our Better Together campaign. Visit the website to plan your order.
McNally’s is an example of a family business passed down through generations. It’s the kind of place that has been attracting regulars and newcomers to its warm and welcoming atmosphere for more than 100 years. Rose McNally opened McNally’s Quick Lunch in 1921 and, after Prohibition, applied for a liquor license, creating McNally’s Tavern. If you haven’t heard of the Schmitter – Philadelphia’s Big League Sandwich, invented by Hugh James McNally more than a half-century ago – just visit the website and read the “Long Short Story.” We think McNally’s and the Schmitter are a perfect example of things that go “better together.”
Chestnut Hill Brewing Company cultivates a comfortable, laid-back, and welcoming vibe with a self-described “healthy-ish” menu. Their website speaks of hospitality and giving back to the community. Nick and Lindsey, the owners of CH Brewing, are making good on that promise by supporting the Better Together campaign the evening of Jan. 30, when a special menu of craft beer flights and wood-fired pizza will be offered. A percentage of each guest check will support CHCA and Chestnut Hill Local. Don’t forget to bring your furry friends! Resident dogs Barley and Hopz are featured on the website.
Business and community – it all works Better Together!
