Chestnut Hill college announces layoffs, salary cuts

Chestnut Hill college announced last week that it eliminated 12 staff positions and furloughed 21 other staffers among other personnel cuts. Those cuts included a 15% salary cuts to the college president Carol Jean Vale, 10% cuts to the school’s vice presidents and 5% cuts to the rest of the president’s “cabinet.” Faculty salaries were cut by 5%

Statement from the college said the layoffs were due to continued financial burdens caused by Covid-19. The cuts took effect on Oct. 10 and were planned through the end of the year.

“The College’s financial forecast for fall 2020 requires spending cuts of approximately $3.2 million, largely the result of lost revenue from room and board and all fees outside of tuition.  After reducing non-payroll related expenses, $1.3 million dollars remained to be cut,” the statement said.

We recognize that these decisions are painful for all who are subject to them, and the College regrets the necessity to implement them,” the statement read. “In enacting these changes, the College studied all options and attempted in every case to minimize the impact on our valued colleagues.  In the end, we believe that these reductions are critical to assure the future of the College and our continuing mission to serve the needs of our students.
