On Thursday, Feb. 24, Mt Airy resident Dan Muroff secured the 9th Ward Democratic Committee endorsement as its choice for the congressional seat of the 2nd District.

The 9th Ward, which covers all of Chestnut Hill and some of Mount Airy, has a reputation as one of Philadelphia’s most progressive and open Democratic wards. All candidates were invited to speak to the committee, which then voted on who it would endorse.

The city’s Democratic Committee, in contrast, endorsed incumbent Chaka Fatah, despite the fact that the Congressman was indicted last year and faces trial on charges that he illegally used more than $1 million in campaign funds for personal expenses.

Muroff, who is the Democratic leader of the 9th Ward, is running against Fatah, as well as State Rep. Dwight Evans, Center City State Rep. Brian Sims and Lower Merion Township Commissioner Brian Gordon during the April 26th Democratic Primary Election.

“I am honored that my colleagues have resoundingly endorsed my campaign for the 2nd Congressional District," Muroff said in a release. “In Congress, I am committed to fight to reduce gun violence, for a cleaner environment and for greater investment in our communities. I am committed to building greater economic opportunity across the city, which includes offering second chances for those left behind.”
