Decemberfest, Santa, and shopping are coming to Mt. Airy on Saturday

Mt. Airy is hosting its Decemberfest Holiday Shopping Stroll on Germantown Avenue on Saturday -- and this year, organizers hint, it will look a little different.

The stroll will take place all along the Germantown Avenue commercial corridor in Mt. Airy from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with shops open and full of gift items (including many handmade by local artists) and offering festive holiday cheer. There will be live holiday music, a visit from Black Santa (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), festive food and drink, fire pits, a live ice sculpting demonstration, and more.

Organizers recommend that if you can, you should walk the length of the corridor to see everything happening during Decemberfest. Between Johnson Street and Allens Lane is about a 30-minute, 1.3-mile walk. You can start at either end. Parking is available on the street, and the 23 bus runs down Germantown Avenue.

Some of the highlights include:

•Ice sculpting, noon to 1:30 p.m. Local ice artist Peter Slavin will be doing a live demonstration at Lutheran Seminary Plaza (across from Wawa).

•Santa will be stationed at Lovett Library and available for pictures from 11 a.m. to noon. Then he’ll be roving the Avenue and making stops at a few special places from noon to 1 p.m. And finally, he will be stationed in the greenhouse at Rothe Florists for additional pictures (7148 Germantown Ave.) from 1-2 p.m.

• Live holiday music from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Forbidden Brass – a local low brass ensemble featuring a variety of trombones and tubas – will perform holiday favorites at 7165 Germantown Ave.

Participating merchants include brick and mortar businesses on Germantown Avenue, a variety of food and beverage merchants, and pop-up locations at 7165 Germantown Ave., 7167 Germantown Ave., and 6819 Germantown Ave. Off the avenue, pop-ups will be located at Outlaw Arts, 20 E. Mt. Airy Ave. (hosting Jewels & Beads), The Juice Room (hosting Passanante’s Home Food Service and Yarrow & Moon Apothecary) and Pax Flora Goods (hosting House of Stuyvesant.)
