Monastery Stables in Mt. Airy will celebrate the role of horses in the history of the Wissahickon during a free event from noon to 3 p.m. Sun., Oct. 27.

The event, which is free and open to the public, invites attendees to explore the lives of horses in the Wissahickon Valley. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about horse care, meet horse owners, and discover details about the animals’ heights, weights, ages, lifespans, and breeds. The event will also address the different types of hoof protection, including metal shoes and rubber boots.

Activities will include grooming lessons, horseback riding demonstrations, and guided tours of both the barn and the historic Monastery complex at 1000 Kitchens Lane. A bake sale will provide refreshments, and attendees will have chances to interact with the horses.

Monastery Stables is a historic full-care boarding barn with 22 stalls on a six-acre country setting with direct access to the many miles of trails in Wissahickon Valley Park. The stables have a large, lighted outdoor sand arena, and mowed fields for riding in or just grazing in-hand after a ride.
