When we reached Mogel by phone, he said he was not yet ready to discuss details. But he’s applied for a liquor license, which is currently posted on the front window. While we don’t yet know a timeline for this project, we do know that the old space did not have the kitchen or bathrooms required for a restaurant, so we expect that to take well into the new year.
The second piece of news is all over social media. So if you haven’t heard about Liberty Kitchen, and its plans to open up in the Market at the Fareway, you might not be on TikTok.
The deli and market recently went viral for its kale Caesar cutlet sandwich – which quickly grew so popular that the sales jumped from just about a hundred to more than 1,000 virtually overnight. It also happens that Liberty buys its meat from KP’s Fine Meats – which is also bringing its business up to Market at the Fareway – and will open its doors by the end of the year.
The now-famous sandwich – breathlessly described by drooling enthusiasts as one of the best they’ve ever eaten – features breaded chicken, kale, cheese, crispy onions, and a house Caesar dressing.
This sudden burst of fame – which includes attention from the Philadelphia Inquirer and an appearance on the Drew Barrymore show – has the folks at Liberty Kitchen more than busy. So details on the opening day at Market at the Fareway – which will be the sandwich shop’s third location after the ones in South Kensington and Fishtown – won’t be ready anytime soon.
Still, Ann Nevel, retail advocate for the Chestnut Hill Business District, said the arrival of the viral sandwich can only mean good things for the neighborhood.
“We couldn't be more thrilled about Liberty Kitchen coming to Chestnut Hill,” Nevel says. “Their products are top-notch. It clearly is hugely popular, and all of the media attention for Liberty Kitchen will bring a lot of new shoppers and eaters to Chestnut Hill.”
