Foliage, a plant store at 8139 Germantown Ave. in Chestnut Hill, is closing. The business’s last day will be on Feb. 28.
According to Yolanda Palmer, owner of Foliage, the decision to close comes from “a lot of factors,” but the main one was financial.
“I wasn’t bringing in enough money to maintain the store,” Palmer explained. “I couldn’t afford for the money to be up and then drop all the way down.”
Palmer plans to keep running Foliage in an online capacity on Shopify, Amazon, Etsy, and other social media platforms. Starting Feb. 14, Palmer will run a closing sale with 50% off plants and accessories.
Palmer opened the business in Dec. 2021, filling the building with plants of all varieties. She also offered services to take care of people’s plants while they’re away from home. Throughout her time on the Hill, Palmer said she made many valuable memories and connections.
“[Closing is] very upsetting,” Palmer told the Local. “I’m going to miss the community…I’m going to miss the beauty of Chestnut Hill. I love in the summertime planting flowers in my window box and along the block. I love the store and maintaining the store. I love the customers and the community, the children, the dogs — everything.”
Ann Nevel, retail advocate for the Chestnut Hill Business District, said the store will be “deeply missed.”
“Foliage has been a showcase for [Palmer’s] passion for plants and her generosity of spirit,” Nevel said. “She has brought warmth and beauty to this community. Her customers and fans are grateful that she will continue to offer her services and plants online.”
Palmer said one of her favorite memories from her time running Foliage was a recent First Friday, when a saxophone player at the side of a store drew a crowd around him.
“I have lots of favorite memories,” Palmer said. “Every day was a good memory for me.”
Palmer said she is grateful for many local people and organizations — including Richard Snowden of Bowman Properties, the Chestnut Hill Local, the Chestnut Hill Conservancy, the Chestnut Hill Library, the Rotary Club of Chestnut Hill, and the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
Foliage will have light refreshments on Saturday, Feb. 14 from 12-3 p.m. to begin the closing sale and offer customers a chance to say goodbye.
