The Philadelphia Folk Festival is set to make its return Aug. 16-18 following a one-year hiatus.

The 61st edition of the iconic event will take place at its longtime home, the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, approximately 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia. After taking a pause in 2023, the festival is scaling back to accommodate nearly 5,000 patrons daily, a reduction from previous years.

The Roxborough-based Philadelphia Folksong Society, a non-profit organization,  produces the annual festival. The society used the break to restructure operations, address financial concerns, and redefine the event to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Organizers say the 2024 festival will feature multiple music stages, educational workshops, craft vendors, and on-site camping options. The event aims to showcase a diverse range of musical styles under the folk umbrella, including world fusion, Celtic, singer-songwriter, folk rock, bluegrass, and more.

Founded in 1962, the Philadelphia Folk Festival has grown to become one of the longest-running folk music festivals in the United States. Throughout its history, it has played a significant role in preserving and promoting folk music and related forms of expression.

The festival is actively recruiting volunteers to assist with various aspects of the event. Organizers emphasize that volunteering offers a unique perspective on the festival experience and provides opportunities to meet like-minded music enthusiasts.

Tickets for the three-day event are now available for purchase. In keeping with its family-friendly tradition, children aged 4 and under can attend the festival free of charge. The event will feature a range of activities designed for younger attendees, including crafts, singing, and introductory instrument lessons.

The Philadelphia Folksong Society, established in 1957, continues its mission to preserve the past, promote the present, and secure the future of folk music through education, presentation, and participation. The festival serves as the organization's largest annual program.

In previous years, the Philadelphia Folk Festival has attracted over 35,000 visitors and nearly 7,000 campers to the Old Pool Farm. While the 2024 event will be smaller in scale, organizers are committed to maintaining the festival's spirit and tradition.
