Funding from this grant will support equipment for athletic programs, after-school activities and summer camp programming. In addition, funding will support events to help draw more visitors to the playground, support a master plan for the recreation center, and cover costs for small scale repairs, the group said in a news release.
The Mt. Airy Playground serves as a center for a multitude of locally based athletic programs, including Mt. Airy Baseball, Mt. Airy Bantams Football and Cheerleading, karate instruction, adult soccer and basketball.
The after-school program provides cultural and educational enrichment for students from area elementary schools. Daily activities include homework help, arts and crafts, chess and introduction to athletics.
The Friends of Mt. Airy Playground is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the betterment of the playground. In 2025, the organization worked with community members, the city’s Department of Parks & Recreation, and Councilmember Cindy Bass’s office to develop a facility master plan.
