Crystal Jackson, owner of Perfectly Flawless Boutique in Germantown, has prioritized the customer experience. Not only are the walls of the shop covered with motivational messages, but Jackson herself is eager to promote self-love and empowerment through fashion.

“It’s about turning a visit into an experience,” Jackson said. “At Perfectly Flawless, we offer what I call ‘fashion therapy’ — where you don’t just buy clothes, you leave more confident than when you walked in.”

Jackson has been offering this personalized experience to customers since her shop opened in 2014. However, for small businesses like Perfectly Flawless, this year is unique.

In 2026, major events like the semiquincentennial (America’s 250th birthday), the FIFA World Cup, and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game are coming to Philadelphia. Jackson is hopeful that tourists visiting the city will consider her boutique.

“My goal is simple,” Jackson said. “When people come to Philadelphia in 2026, I want ‘visit Perfectly Flawless in Germantown’ to be on their list. Not just to shop, but to experience something they can’t get anywhere else.”

A ‘must-visit’ boutique

Jackson, who was born and raised in Germantown, not only runs a shop in her hometown. She also is heavily involved in charitable endeavors. In 2016, Jackson founded the Perfectly Flawless Foundation as a nonprofit arm focused on collecting gently used clothing to give to those in need.

Through the boutique and the foundation, Jackson’s ventures in Germantown speak to her evident love of the neighborhood. In 2026, she wants to share this love with tourists. The only challenge? Visibility.

“We have incredible businesses in Northwest Philly, but we’re not always included in the larger city narrative,” Jackson said. “The challenge isn’t that we’re far. It’s that we haven’t been positioned as a destination yet.”

Jackson hopes the commercial corridors of Germantown attract tourists this year, but she said it can’t be accomplished by sitting around and waiting for them to come. Instead, she realizes that businesses need to market themselves as “must-visit” locations.

Through her website and social media, Jackson spreads the word about her business. She also hosts events — such as cookouts and happy hours — to attract customers.

Drawing tourists to Germantown

Jackson is one of many Germantown business owners hoping to draw tourists to the neighborhood. Germantown United CDC, a nonprofit that promotes the revitalization of the neighborhood and its business corridors, is working with many small businesses to make the most of the opportunities provided by America250 and sporting events. In collaboration with Visit Philadelphia, the organization hosted a destination optimization workshop, an info session designed to help business owners improve their online presence.

Leo Dillinger, executive director of Germantown United CDC, believes such a workshop can benefit business owners by targeting weaknesses on platforms such as Google and Tripadvisor.

“We recognize that in order for businesses to really succeed and tap into this tourism boom for Philadelphia, you have to update and improve your online presence,” Dillinger said.

It’s not just the Northwest neighborhoods that are focused on attracting tourists. Jessica Calter, senior vice president of advancement and external affairs for Visit Philadelphia, said all of the city’s neighborhoods can offer something special for visitors.

“We here at Visit Philly see the 250th as a citywide opportunity. It’s a moment that extends far beyond Center City and Old City,” Calter said. “We really are aspiring to be the most welcoming destination in the world, and that starts with investing in our neighborhoods and giving them the tools they need to succeed, because they’re really the front door to the city.”

Jackson believes that the key to bringing tourists to Germantown is teamwork.

“If we collaborate as a corridor — boutiques, restaurants, creatives — we can create a full-day experience that pulls people into Germantown,” Jackson said.
