Eighth District City Councilmember Cindy Bass' Summer Events Series, a set of free community events that include live music and fun kids' activities, is set to start July 18.

First up will be the "Jazz, Funk & Soul Concert," scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 25, at the Morris Estate Cultural Center, 1610 W. Chelten Ave. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., guests can expect the R&B rhythms of Vinyl Proof. DJ Gary O and special guest Patty Jackson from WDAS Radio will be present at the event. Soul Matters, an R&B/Soul/Latin jazz band, is set to open the evening on July 25.

Additionally, starting July 19 and continuing every Wednesday in July and August, the series will host "Oldies in the Park" at Vernon Park, 5800 Germantown Ave. in Philadelphia. MC Derek Lee will guide the festivities, with DJ Gary O spinning classic tunes from legends like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Delfonics and The Supremes.

The series, which is free and open to all, is about more than just entertainment.

"We will also have local vendors who will participate with tables filled with goods and services," said Bass. "City Department representatives will provide information about various city programs, allowing attendees to learn about what our fantastic city has to offer in a fun way."
