Two area field hockey teams were put on display on Sept. 1 as Mount St. Joseph Academy took the short trip to Germantown Academy for an early season stick session.

The Mount took a major graduation hit last spring, as a full dozen players departed with the Class of 2026. Fortunately, all of the returning Class of ’27 athletes are strong sticksters who are going on to play in college. Tess Hankins is heading to Cornell University, and Molly Giordano will join the team at Rowan University. Two other current seniors are bound for Massachusetts, Julia McGlynn (Boston College) and goalie Kathryn Pedicino (Holy Cross). Meanwhile, Caitlyn Paul will head west to Northwestern University.

Hankins, McGlynn, Paul and Pedicino are the 2026 team captains for the Mounties. Three other seniors are new additions to the varsity, twins Cecilia and Olivia Esbensen and Lucia Mascaro.

Junior Sara Massella was the youngest member of the varsity squad last fall, and this year the Class of 2028 is being restocked by Cece Freimuth, Kylie Katsock, Maura McDermott, Sam Travers, Tierney Wertz and Kelly Whittock. The lone sophomore on varsity for the start of the season is Raegen Welsh.

The Magic don’t have a new head coach, but their coach has a new last name. Married earlier this year, Kyra (Castano) Bloemer is entering her sixth season directing the Magic.

The Germantown Academy Patriots do have a new head coach, Erik Enters. An upper school counselor at GA, he has been an assistant coach for the field hockey and girls’ lacrosse teams. A former player on the USA Men’s Indoor National Team, he’s served as an assistant coach with the Women’s Indoor National Team.

Enters was the head field hockey coach at Neumann University for four seasons, from 2021 to 2024, and before that he had a long tenure as head coach at Perkiomen Valley High School. GA assistant coach Annie Coll has joined the staff after a career as a standout player at Springfield Township High School and the University of Scranton.

Two of their new charges at GA have already picked the college teams they’ll play for. Cece Durkin will attend Bucknell University, and fellow senior Genevieve Gajan is going to the College of William & Mary. The other members of the experienced senior class are Caroline Baughman, Caitlin Bulicki, Reese Dooley, Sophie Krey and Brooke Sturm.

There are also seven juniors; Abby Bradley, Wynne Campbell, Megan Faccio, Lily Hart, Addyson Magliari, Anna McVeigh and Ellie Murray. Rounding out the varsity are sophomores Layla Macready, Stella McGettigan and Molly Ryan, and freshmen Molly Burkholder, Louisa Holmes and Alexis Mersky.

The tri-captains for the Patriots are Sturm, Magliari and Ryan.
