Germantown Friends School girls’ varsity soccer dominated their competition on Friday, Oct. 19 against Friends Select High School. The girls came out victorious with a 9-0 shutout as they move into their playoff season. To add on to their satisfying win, it was also their Senior Day.

As if in recognition of the school’s Senior Day, the team’s seniors, Captain Gigi Guida and Sophy Henisz, helped their team to a win with one goal from Guida and two from Henisz.

“They have just really made a mark on this program, and it wouldn’t be to where it is today without these two players.” said Coach Cailin DiGiacomo about her two seniors. “They have developed into amazing leaders … They are great role models and it’s something that the younger girls can really look up to.”

Joining the score sheet were Margaret Harvey and Anna McDonald with two goals, and Lily Seldin and Lauryn Milbourne with one a piece. Annie McLauglin contributed with three assists, while goalkeeper Bluma Hammarhead recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

“We’ve done a lot of particular drills throughout the season that have prepared us for where we are now,” DiGiacomo said. “So now it’s just about coming to the games with high energy and being ready to execute. We know exactly what to do, we just have to play our game.”

While both seniors do not know what school they will be attending in the fall, it is clear that they will truly miss their team.

“I will definitely miss laughing with them,” said Guida. “We have some good inside jokes and a great sense of humor, so I will miss that.”

“Like Gigi said, we’re really tight knit this year,” Henisz said. “Honestly, we’re pretty much a family. Carpooling to and from fields, for me, will be a big part. Also, just hanging out with the girls before we’re practicing and even on the field when you have that certain moment that just clicks while you’re playing. I’m going to miss it next year – it’s going to be tough.”

Both seniors agreed that it was an amazing feeling to win their last game at home. Their next game will be Friday, Nov. 2. It will be the first round of the PAISAA State Tournament.
