The nonprofit world celebrates a day to give back

The nonprofit world celebrates Giving Tuesday on November 30.

The holiday season in Chestnut Hill is a wonderful tradition, kicking off in earnest with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday following Thanksgiving, and then Cyber Monday, Nov. 29. Giving Tuesday was conceived in 2012 by the New York City 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a way to take a break from the rush of consumerism and remember the spirit of the season.  Jack Kelly, writing in Forbes, described it as “an international celebration of generosity.”

Billed as a day to give back, this year Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia has a goal to reach 250 donors in just 24 hours.

Since the onset of pandemic, the idea of home has taken on a new urgency, as more people had a harder time with rents and many families had to spend time in homes that did not have adequate space or structure to accommodate students, parents, or the elderly all trying to work at the same time. Habitat Philadelphia’s outreach last year, at the height of the pandemic, was one of their most successful. Habit says supporters responded, and they have hopes to reach even more donors, large or small, on Giving Tuesday.

In addition, once Habitat reaches 250 donors, they can unlock an additional $10,000 from a group of generous supporters.

The Generosity Blossoms partnership campaign between Robertson’s Flowers and Habitat raised more than $5,000 during the summer. From April to August, Robertson’s sold these floral special arrangements with 20% of the sales going to Habitat, supporting projects to build and repair homes for Philadelphia families. “It’s not necessarily Robertson’s writing this check – it’s the community together,” said Taylor Ferry, Director of Sales & Operations at Robertson’s. “That always feels good.”

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia has built or sold 216 affordable homes to first-time homeowners in Philadelphia and has strategically partnered with more than 500 families to make critical home repairs. Right now they’re still about $750,000 short on their $5 million We Build Together Campaign goal, and they hope Giving Tuesday will bring them closer.
