The PGA Tour is bringing one of its signature events to the Philadelphia Cricket Club's historic Wissahickon course in Flourtown next year, along with an estimated $70 million in regional economic impact.

The Truist Championship, a PGA Tour Signature event formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship, will tee off in May 2025 and feature the top 70 ranked players in the world. 

With a limited field and larger prize money than regular tour events, it is a coveted stop on the circuit and is expected to attract some of golf's biggest names to the region. The purse for this tour is expected to be about $20 million. 

"This is a culmination of acknowledgment by the different bodies of golf that we truly have a great championship golf course," Cricket Club President Tom Sheridan told the Local. "Hopefully this event will help to demonstrate our members' passion and commitment to the game of golf, as well as the warm and welcoming culture which we cherish at the club."

Wells Fargo Championships have typically been held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, with The PGA Championship using that course next year, the PGA had to find an alternate location. 

Joie Chitwood, Executive Director of the Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, said the historic nature of the PCC course was a big selling point for organizers. 

"PCC is such a unique and historic property. We're hearing from a lot of our PGA Tour players about how excited they are to play here," Chitwood said. "For them, there's genuine excitement about getting to play on a property this historic – and such a high-quality property."

A long local history

The Philadelphia Cricket Club, founded in 1854, introduced golf in 1895 and went on to host the 1907 and 1910 U.S. Open Golf Championships. 

According to Sheridan, Philadelphia is currently the fifth-largest golf market in the United States and is often referred to as the "cradle of golf."

The club’s Wissahickon Course, which opened for play in 1922, was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, who  collaborated with fellow club members George Thomas and William Flynn who collectively would become three of the most respected American golf course architects of their time. 

It was restored by Keith Foster in 2013-2014 to highlight the original design’s strategic bunkering, contoured greens and narrow fairways.

In recent years, PCC has hosted many different sporting events, including the USGA 2024 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, the PSA Bronze event “The Chestnut Hill Classic” in 2023 and 2024, the 2016 Constellation Senior Players Championship and the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship.

The Truist Championship would be the first PGA Tour event in Pennsylvania since the 2018 BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. And the tournament's move to Philadelphia is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the region. 

Truist Chairman and CEO Bill Rogers said Truist sees the event as a 52-week commitment, and wants to engage with local businesses and organizations and the tourism community to maximize visitor turnout.

"Starting in year one at The Philadelphia Cricket Club, followed by an extended run at the Quail Hollow Club, the Truist Championship will be a best-in-class experience for fans thanks to the support of a hometown title sponsor that holds a vested interest in positively impacting its local communities," Rogers said.
